Asus Rog Strix X99 Gaming Motherboard Review

ASUS’ Republic of Gamers (ROG) products started as way to build a motherboard targeted specifically for the gaming market. Since then they have done a good job of improving the ROG range of products at a reasonable price.

The ASUS ROG Strix X99 Gaming motherboard is built for Intel’s Core I7 socket 2011-v3 family of processors (such as the 10 core i7 6950X). Although it can’t be called a budget board at $319, given this is an Extreme Series processor-based product this is a competitive price.

The ASUS ROG Strix X99 Gaming motherboard is not the best of the stack of motherboards at this level, but comes with a lot of value for an X99 motherboard. All ROG motherboard come their fair share of features when you look at the packages in full and this board is no different. With an X99 motherboard you’re getting the highest performance motherboard platform and highest core count that the Intel product stack offers. This gives the buyer an advantage over the rest of the available platforms on the market and that includes AMD’s new Ryzen range.

Overclocking is the feature that makes the difference with this ROG motherboard. It offers both software and hardware options that the enthusiast can use to wring every last hertz of performance from the installed components. The ASUS ROG Strix X99 Gaming motherboard was able to add an extra 60MHz of performance over the 4342MHz overclock that a Core i7 6950X was able to generate with a previous generation of ASUS’ Sabertooth X99 motherboard.

But what really sets the ROG Strix X99 Gaming apart from other motherboards is the features that come with the board which are squarely aimed at the gamer. At the hardware level it provides ESD Guards to prevent inbound current spikes from damaging the board. It also comes with the Gamer’s Guardian suite of hardware level protections. With RGB lighting being all the rage now, ASUS supports this feature with AURA controlled RGB LED headers built-in. With AURA, you also have the ability to manage attached RGB accessories as a bonus.

When you add up the whole package, it’s tough to find a similar product that even comes close. With arguably the best BIOS on the market, a fully featured, fully-functioning software suite and the hardware power to back it all up it packs a ton of value for a gamer’s hard earned dollar.
