Every child has the right get all the fun, education and basic comforts of life. This was the motive of Edward Rudolf (a civil servant and Sunday school teacher, South London) to establish The Church of England Children’s Society in 1881. It is approved by the Church of England and later on in 1982 it got the title of The Children’s Society. Its main objectives are to upgrade the life of poor and young children by facilitating better opportunities of education, work, physical and mental well being.
Childrens Society Young Carers, young carers are the children under 18, who take care of their siblings, parents, sick or old family members. They perform all the basic responsibilities of cooking food, managing home budget, giving medicines to the sick, taking their siblings to school, helping the ill person in his day to day activities. Under high pressure of responsibilities, young carers often come under mental stress. They are unable to play and have fun like other normal children. They find it difficult to manage their studies and even miss their schooling in some cases.
Around 8lacs of children in UK are performing the responsibilities of young carers in their homes and one out of three have mental stress. 27% of young carers miss or get very less of education. Following initiatives are taken by the children’s society to provide education, healthy and happy lifestyle to young carers:
-Young Carers Festival: In summer season, the Children’s Society organizes the largest festival in the world for young carers in partnership with YMCA Fairthorne Group. This festival gives time, pleasure and retreats to young carers to forget all their responsibilities and have all the fun for some days.
-National Young Carers Initiative: The society gets in touch with the young carers through regional schools, surveys or government data. It spreads awareness about their rights, physical or mental abuse, malnutrition and its remedies by running workshops. Counsellors or teachers are appointed to listen to their problems and soothen them with their invaluable guidance and support. It ensures that every young carer is getting time for completing his school tasks, studying and playing.
-Community Hidden Harm Awareness Team: It works for the children between 7-18 years who are taking care of a drug or alcohol addict person.
-Advice and Support for Young Carers: The society has set various platforms to provide information to young carers regarding their education, employment, rights as young carers, allowances, bills, physical and mental health.
The children’s society is working hard to enable a life of their dreams to all underprivileged Childrens Society Young Carers. But it needs support from all over the world to accomplish its goals. By donating a little share of income, anyone can get the opportunity to serve humanity.
