Cultivating A Stoic Mindset

Cultivating A Stoic Mindset

We may be able to escape an unloving home and a stressful office by going on vacation but we can never outrun an anxious mind. We will always have to deal with our head so we might as well befriend it and make it an ally. If you find yourself overthinking about everything and being emotional about all that you encounter, then it may be helpful to learn more about the stoic mindset. You are not alone. Many have suffered through these emotions since ancient times. Consider adopting a coping mechanism known as a stoic mindset.

Tune Out the Noise

Stoics listen to very few people within their circle. If you value someone’s expertise, then you can ask for their opinion and use this in your decision-making. However, you should not do the same for the words of everyone else. It doesn’t matter if a person insults you whether this is a family member or a stranger. His opinion is just noise. The same is true with flattery. Just as you should not feel overly negative about criticisms, you should also stop caring about empty praises. For example, don’t chase likes on social media. Set a path for yourself and don’t let others affect it.

Stay Calm and Composed

Not everything will go our way in life. In fact, each day might bring minor annoyances that can stress us out. We can wake up to find a broken vase, a stain on our favorite dress, a strong rain that prevents us from hiking with friends, a sudden price surge in oil, or a selling out of a product we wanted to buy. Instead of being mad over these things, we can breathe in and stay calm. These can all be managed in one way or another.

Don’t Worry About the Future

It is common for people to worry about the future. We spend hours imagining what might happen and what we can do to respond to countless situations. Although planning ahead can be beneficial, sometimes we go overboard and worry without any concrete gain. Stoics will remind us that the future hasn’t happened yet and that it can go quite differently from how we imagine. It’s better to focus on the present.

Adopt a Neutral Stance

We should also remember that things are seldom purely negative or positive. We should refrain from making a judgment. Instead, we can adopt a neutral stance that accepts with reality with open eyes and adjusts accordingly to make the most of it.
