Level 3 surgical masks are given this designation by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). These masks were originally constructed to be worn by medical professionals during procedures where high and or moderate amounts of aerosols, sprays, or fluids might be produced such as oral surgery, periodontal surgery, or implant placement.
Care and Storage of Masks
The materials used to construct the Level 3 Mask are multiple layers of non-woven polypropylene. These materials cannot be washed. Washing the mask may damage it, reducing its filtration abilities and lessening the filter material’s absorption force. Discard after use. Unused and unopened masks should receive proper storage. Always store them in a dry, clean environment with far less than 80% humidity at temperatures between 28° to 86°degrees Fahrenheit. Do not expose masks to direct sunlight, chemical pollution, or high indoor temperatures.
Ensure Proper Fit of the Masks
To ensure the mask is fitting properly and placed correctly on the face, first place the mask on the chin and pull the ear straps around the ears. Pull the remaining mask upward to the bridge of the nose. Pinch the soft frame around the nose to ensure a snug fit. Look for gaps in the fit and take a few breaths. If gaps appear adjust the mask until they disappear. Always remember to wash your hands before handling a mask and placing it on your face.
What Does a Level 3 Mask Keep Out?
Masks at a level 3 are designed to keep out dust, fluid droplets, airborne particles, aerosols, pollen, dust, and microorganisms. These masks are built to have a filtration capacity differing from fluid to bacteria, to particles. Fluid resistance is mmHg of 160. Bacterial Filtration Efficiency is BFE @3.0µm and its Particulate Filtration Efficiency is (PFE) @0.1µm.
The mask is for indoor and outdoor use. It should be worn no more than 4 hours straight without removal. Wash your hands before handling. Before placing on your face, always inspect the mask for defects or damage. Level 3 surgical masks are not designed to protect the wearer from diseases such as Covid-19. They can however, provide a level of protection when others also wear masks. For best results, wear them for one day up to 8 hours. If need be, they can be work longer, for up to 2 days. Surgical & procedural masks are not washable. If you wash this item, it may become damaged, and its filtration capabilities will be diminished. Washing these masks will cause penetration and damage to the absorption force of filter material. Any time you notice that your breathing has become restrictive, please discard.
