Being a Christian does not mean you should not have anything to do with people who are not fellow Christians. Many reputable Christian groups organize outreach events to target non-Christians. These events are unique in a number of ways. First, these events offer the Christians and non-Christians the opportunity to meet on a “neutral ground” without the Christians actively trying to convert the non-Christians. Again, some of these events are social and informal so people are relaxed on these occasions. Another important feature of these outreach programs is that the organizers use humor and wit to pass the message. It follows that if you are a Christian comedian for outreach events, you should be flexible and innovative. Below are some ways you can do an excellent job as a Christian comedian.
Be Realistic
You are definitely a Christian comedian but you are not performing for a purely Christian audience. Some people in the audience do not practice the Christian faith. Now, this does not mean you should make them feel like outsiders. Target some of your jokes at them but do this in a polite and dignified manner. You can give the microphone to a few people in the audience to express their views on Christian folks. Everything should be done in a rather laid-back and informal manner because the event is not a formal one.
Market Christianity Tactfully
An outreach program offers you the opportunity to market Christianity but you should do this tactfully. Talk about Christianity in a fun and witty manner. Point out to the non-Christian audience that practicing Christians are not saints. Do not ever give the impression that Christians have a “Holier than thou” attitude. Just point out that Christianity is largely a matter of salvation by grace. In addition, you should tell clean jokes about born again Christians and the struggles they face every day as they try to live the Christian way.
Use Biblical Characters
One excellent source of humor for the Christian comedian is the Holy Bible. This book is full of colorful characters and your audience can definitely relate to the experiences of these characters. For instance, you can talk about the story of Jacob and his brother Esau and point out that the elder son lost his birthright because he could not resist the aroma of pottage. You can also talk about the experiences of Jacob and how his father-in-law deceived him in spite of their ancestral relationship.
Finally, look at the bright side of life and point out to the audience that there is plenty of positive humor in Christianity.
