Ideas For Silly Science Experiments

Having fun is an essential part of learning. Even though this is not the traditional view, it’s still true. Think about it: when you’re having fun you retain more information. You get to look deeper into things and so you understand them better. It doesn’t matter if you’re teaching kids or adults. Fun is part of learning! And, there is nothing more fun than silly science experiments.

Many of these experiments can be done using regular household objects. You can do them in your kitchen if you want to. As mentioned earlier, it’s all about enjoying yourself and having fun. Here a few ideas to make this a better experience for you.

Experiment with heat

Heat is a fundamental form of energy. You can teach about how heat travels with several cool experiments. For example, you can demonstrate how heat makes air travel. Take a bottle of warm water that is still steaming. Put a glove over it. Watch the glove expand as the air travels upwards.

Now, this is something that should be done with older kids because of the risk involved. For younger ones, you can demonstrate while they watch from a save distance. They will still get the principle while having a good laugh.

The magic of magnetism

Magnets have mystified human beings ever since they have been discovered. Many kids play with them for hours, fascinated by magnetic behavior. You can do several fun things with magnets.

For example, place a large magnet under the table. Then use it to move a metal object on top. This will look like magic! You can also make a magnet float in the air. Watch it flip as its other side gets attracted. Or, show how a compass works. This is also a great opportunity to explain earth’s magnetic field.

Capillary action

How about showing how air pressure and capillary action work together? All you need is a straw and a bowl of water. Pull on the straw with your mouth and watch the water pour out. It make take several tries but this is a really fun thing to watch.

When you do these experiments don’t be afraid to get messy. The point of having fun is to let go. As long as you do them in the kitchen or bathroom it should be easy to clean up.

Remember to stay safe as well. You may want to get a pair of safety goggles if necessary. Also, ask your students for ideas. They may have their own silly science experiments they want to share.
