Not so many people know how big Africa is. If you think you can tour 5 African countries in five days, forget it. It is best to focus on one country for about 10 days with up to 3 stops. There is no need to rush an amazing trip.
Private or Group Travel
The camaraderie of a group safari makes sense when you want to create memories with other people you share passions with. Natural habitats are perfect places to visit as a group. Perhaps your friends love wildlife photography. There is a host of themed trips for such adventures. A group program of about 10 people with more guides is ideal. In most 5-star places, don’t expect much cost saving because the charges are made on a per-person basis. For a more general experience, create a budget so you can enjoy flexibility on private tours. You can even hire a vehicle where you will be traveling with other tourists.
When to Visit Africa
The driest season is June to October and is the best time to watch wildlife. Note that it is the busiest hence most expensive period to travel. Find out what works best for you, especially the budget. If you can make it, go for a safari just before the peak season.
Guides
Good guides come in handy when you want to see East Africa’s Big 5 i.e. elephants, lions, buffaloes, rhinos, and leopards. Check out for other big-ticket wildlife like giraffes, wild beats, antelopes, hyenas, cheetahs, crocodiles, gazelles, jackals, hippos, and so on. Many times, the driver is the guide so make sure they have a keen eye for spotting wildlife. They must also be experienced and licensed.
Self-Drives
If you want to explore your adventurous side, you can choose to self-drive in a public game park. This is probably the cheapest bet. You simply rent a car to into the African bush. There are paved roads and clear signs so it is hard to get lost. However, without enough knowledge, you can miss out on some wildlife scenes. Make use of guidebooks on how to spot animals in a particular destination. You could ask other tourists where they have spotted the best game.
Whether you are solo or on a group safari to Africa, get ready for dust. Don’t forget to carry a bandana and sunglasses to cover your face. Bringing some extras will go a long way. You’ll need plenty of water and lots of snacks.
