Light bulbs come in a variety of shapes, wattages, and light sources. A 28w light bulb could be an LED (light emitting diode), incandescent, halogen, or compact fluorescent (CFL) bulb.
The equivalent to the 28-watt bulb is the spiral LED 13-watt bulb. These bulbs have LED diodes spread along the spiral filament that is visible in the bulb instead of in individual lined up or grouped diodes traditionally placed in an LED bulb.
It’s a lot harder to choose a light bulb today, because there are so many distinct types to select from. Different lighting sources create different lumens and cost varying amounts to run for hours, days, and weeks. There is some consistency between one type of lighting source and another if you are aware of the comparison charts that indicate which lighting powers give off a similar amount of illumination.
LED light is measured in lumens. Halogen light is measured in wattages. Incandescent, CFL, and halogen light are all measured in watts. 25 watts is equivalent to 375 lumens or 6 LED watts. If the fixture you are replacing the bulb for has a maximum bulb wattage, you’ll have to follow those guidelines. If not, you’ll need to use discretion. However, if the bulb is enclosed try not to exceed the previous bulb’s wattage for safety’s sake.
A benefit of incandescent light is that it emits all the varieties of warm light wavelengths, making anything it shines on look pleasing to the eye. Incandescent light works by an electric current passing through a tungsten filament enclosed in an airtight glass enclosure. Halogen light is also a form of incandescent light. Halogen light is different from traditional incandescent light because a tungsten filament is wrapped with a clear envelope that contains a small amount of inert gas mixed with halogen.
Fluorescent tubes work by passing electric current between cathodes during mercury and other gases. This reaction radiates energy. The phosphorus coating the outside bulb reacts with the radiant energy and creates light. The compact fluorescent bulb, the CFL is made of tubular loops filled with mercury and looks like the incandescent bulb but functions very much like the fluorescent tube.
The Light emitting diode, the LED bulb is a semiconductor where electricity is applied to a negatively charged diode. This causes an inflow of electrons and the release of photons. When the photon combine, light emits from the diode.
