Lack of sleep can leave people feeling tired and restless. They won’t be as productive as they can be at work. They may even develop health complications if this persists for a long time. Mild cases may be corrected through simple interventions. Serious cases will require the attention of a doctor. Try the following to see if they can help you get some restful sleep:
1. Avoid Overeating Before Bedtime
A full stomach will provide your mind and body with a burst of energy. You may not be able to sleep because you crave movement. If you try to stay in bed, then your mind may become hyperactive instead. Make sure to schedule your last heavy meal a few hours before bedtime to give your body a chance to wind down. Go to the bathroom as often as you need so that you will not have to get up during the night. You might have trouble going back to sleep once you’re up.
2. Turn Off Gadgets and Lights
Screens from computers, televisions, and mobile phones emit blue light. This is known to keep people awake for longer periods. You will have difficulty sleeping if you keep chatting, texting, or gaming on your phone late into the night. Set your gadgets aside on hour or two before you need to sleep. Turn off all the lights in the room if you are sensitive to them. This also applies to standby lights emitted by appliances. Pull the plug for complete darkness. Cover the windows with thick drapes. Wear an eye mask if it helps you block light out.
3. Keep Things Cool and Comfortable
Heat and other forms of discomfort will prevent you from sleeping peacefully. Set your air conditioner to a comfortable level. If this unit emits loud noise, then have it repaired immediately. If you don’t have an A/C, then a fan will do. If there are hot spots on your bed, then consider alternative sleeping arrangements. If your neighbor is being loud, then wear noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs. You can also play white noise or your favorite music to drown them out. Consider talking to your neighbor to get them to stop.
4. Natural Sleep Drink
If these do not work, then you may want to try any of the various sleep-related products in the market. Consume a natural sleep drink, for example, to relax your body and drift into a peaceful slumber. Do check the ingredients so you can be sure about what you are getting. Consult your doctor if you have reservations about these products. Sleep medication can be prescribed as well.
