Some Basic Golf Swing Tips

The golf swing is easy when you watch the pros do it, but to most weekend golfers, it’s still something fraught with potential problems. It’s also perhaps the most important element of your game when it comes to lowering your score, and these basic golf swing tips can help you to master the all important swing.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember when swinging is to keep your head down, although it’s easier said than done. It’s a common mistake to lift the head up, partly to see where the ball is going; if you do that, it will probably go left or right or you will top the ball, sending it only a few yards. Most of us take a few practice swings before actually hitting the ball, and another effective tip is to treat your shot as another practice swing. Instead of actually being preoccupied with hitting the ball, swing as you would when practicing or warming up. Again, easier said than done, but this approach can be surprisingly effective. Following through with the club head is important too, and can help to increase distance and accuracy, as can keeping your hands low on the club, which keeps the ball lower to the ground.

Visualizing where you want the ball to go is also one of the most effective basic golf swing tips. Try to imagine the distance and trajectory you want your ball to take while swinging, whether you’re driving from the tee or chipping onto the green from 80 yards. This is especially important if there are bunkers, a water hazard or patches of rough; try to think positively and tell yourself your ball won’t end up there. Addressing the ball properly is also important when it comes to improving your swing; make sure you are gripping the club comfortably, the club face is open to the ball and you are facing the target. If you tend to hit the ball left or right, your stance can compensate for that.

Practicing is one of the best things any golfer can do to improve their swing, and simply hitting the same shot repeatedly can work wonders. Watching a video of yourself swinging is one of the best ways to notice and fix flaws. Be realistic when you practice or play, and give yourself an attainable goal. But every so often, most of us hit that perfect shot and tell ourselves it can be done.
