The History Of Netball Dresses

Netball has its roots in the late 19th century and was inspired by basketball. The game came about when women started showing an interest in sport, and women in those days where not particularly encouraged to participate in sport. However, since they put the idea forward as a “women only” sport, it was allowed. In those early days of netball, players used netball dresses. As you would imagine, women were not allowed to show off their legs and so the dresses they played in were the typical dresses that they wore from day to day. This meant that they were your floor length dresses. From a sport perspective, this was not practical at all.

Each player wore the same dress and the same color. Over time it became increasingly apparent that players could not recognize members on their team, since all 14 ladies were dressed exactly the same. As time went by the uniforms did change. They now resembled the school uniforms of that time, which were woolen tunics. The dresses were still quite long covering most of the leg, however, it did still provide more freedom of movement. The legs were still covered with woolen stockings, which was also not appropriate for playing sport and made the women hot.

Now days there are various types of netball dresses and they have become more streamlined as the game requires. The netball kits are now available in a variety of bright and eye catching colors. They are also extremely flexible and provide an adequate amount of support to play the game effectively.
