To have a successful newborn photography session, there are quite a few things you should know. And a successful outing doesn’t just mean an album of great pictures. The baby should have slept well during the shoot and the baby’s parents should have been relaxed too. The following are the five tips for good newborn photography in Redcliffe.
Be Confident
Be confident about what you’re doing. Confidence certainly comes with experience but watching photography videos, taking mentorships or classes, asking questions on photography forums, etc. are ways to build up your repertoire too. The videos especially come in quite handy since they throw light on how to exactly handle the baby, soothing techniques, etc.
Communicating Details
It’s important your clients know what the session would be all about. This might sound redundant since both you and the parents know what the ultimate objective is. However, parents may not know how to execute things to achieve the goal. Therefore, let the client know what your approach would be right off the bat. Your website may offer some of that preliminary information. But you need to be a lot more specific. For instance, communicate the exact location, session length, realistic expectations, environment temperature, etc. And a day or two before the session begins, let the parents know what their preparations should be like. If you are asking certain things to get done such as feeding the baby before shoot or incorporating pacifiers, make your reasons for the same known.
Blankets and Beanbags
Beanbags filled with some additional set of beans should help with your posing. The flat, wide work area perfectly lends itself to posing to see the baby properly and work with the baby’s arms and face, and legs. As a result, you won’t be left battling with the baby sinking into a too small, too soft beanbag. As far as blankets go, layering blankets over beanbags makes transitioning the baby easy. The blankets, by the way, should be textured and thick as they are easy to work with during post-processing.
Lighting Matters a Lot
If you don’t have sufficient light or you don’t use your lights well, even your advanced cameras and lenses won’t save the day. It’s not just the light’s intensity but the direction matters too. Flat light, for instance, give the pictures a one-dimensional look. Positioning the light at an angle helps add vital depth to a good-looking portrait. Also, the baby’s head should be placed toward the light as that helps achieve shadowing. Make sure the frame is set based on the window size, light intensity and distance between the floor and window.
