What is Functional Assessment OT?

Functional assessment OT, or occupational therapy functional assessment, is a comprehensive evaluation of an individual’s abilities and limitations related to activities of daily living. It is used to determine the individual’s physical and cognitive abilities in order to create a plan for improving their ability to perform everyday tasks. This type of evaluation can be used with children and adults who have physical or mental health issues that interfere with their ability to function independently at home, work, school, or in the community.

The purpose of functional assessment OT is to assess the person’s strengths and weaknesses in order to provide them with interventions designed for optimal independence. Occupational therapists use this type of evaluation as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for those with physical disabilities, developmental delays, autism spectrum disorder ASD, learning disabilities LD, sensory processing disorder SPD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADHD, traumatic brain injury TBI and other neurological impairments. It can also be used as part of a comprehensive approach when working with seniors who may need assistance due to aging-related declines in physical or cognitive functioning.

During the functional assessment OT process, an occupational therapist will observe how someone performs everyday activities such as dressing themselves or cooking dinner. They may also ask questions about how well certain skills are performed on a daily basis such as writing letters or using public transportation. Additionally they will assess any areas where accommodations might be needed such as hand strength/dexterity or visual perceptual skills that might impact performance during activities like reading or handwriting tasks.

Occupational therapists use various tools such as standardized assessments which measure motor coordination; nonstandardized assessments which evaluate specific skills; questionnaires about habitual behaviors; interviews regarding what activities are meaningful for the individual; informal observations during treatment sessions; assessments that measure balance/coordination; evaluations that explore sensory processing needs; and computer-based programs which measure cognitive functioning among other things. After reviewing all relevant information gathered from these various sources the occupational therapist will develop an intervention plan tailored specifically towards improving any areas identified during the evaluation process which could benefit from additional support so they can reach their highest level of functioning possible while participating in meaningful occupations both now and into the future.
