Intensed Pulse Light laser or IPL laser is used for the treatment of skin to minimize aging effects like skin tan, dry skin, birth marks or scars. It is also used to remove unwanted hairs from the skin.
IPL is similar to laser therapy but it differs in its mechanism as it delivers light of multiple wavelengths opposite to laser therapy where only single wavelength of light is released. Hence in a short time, IPL therapy covers a larger and deeper area of skin.
The light of different wavelengths is targeted to remove damaged cells, pigmentation and hair follicles.
IPL treatment is used to reduce scars, birth marks, melasma, hyperpigmentation, fine wrinkles, spider veins and hair removal.
The light released by laser targets only dead skin cells or hair follicles and causes no harm to normal cells. Hence the skin improves quickly.
IPL must be avoided in pregnancy or under prescription of any strong medications. The treatment must be accomplished by a board certified cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist.
This skin treatment works best on white and brown skin than on black skin. Same is in the removal of hair follicles. Dark hairs are not effectively removed by IPL therapy.
Before starting the treatment, the doctor ensures that there is no other issue related to skin. Pimples, acne or any allergic problems on skin are treated prior the initiation of IPL treatment. Sunbathing, tanning beds, collagen injections or chemical peels are prohibited 2 weeks prior the treatment.
As per American Society for Dermatological Surgery, Aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, or herbal supplements should not to be taken during the laser treatment. These products can cause bleeding.
A handheld device is used by the doctor which releases Intensed Pulse Light into the skin. A pinching sensation is felt by some people which is sometimes numbed by using local anaesthesia or chilling gel.
The whole process takes 20-30 minutes. The person can have redness on skin for 8-12 hours after a session and there may be a little swelling that can last for few days. It takes 3-4 sittings on monthly basis or once in two months to complete the whole treatment. People undergoing treatment are advised to stay protected from direct exposure to sunlight and should avoid make up for upto 24 hours after a single IPL session. Any strong medications should be avoided during whole treatment process.
IPL laser consumes less time and gives excellent results. It is cost effective and requires only 3-4 sessions for overall treatment of skin trouble. After the treatment the person should moisturize skin thrice in a day for atleast three months. People with allergic symptoms, bleeding risks, any serious diseases must avoid or undergo screening to check any adverse effects of laser treatment.
