If you loved your frames in previous years, it was still not recommended that you keep your expensive frames that were still in undamaged shape, but today reglazing lenses is the new craze. Reglazing is simply replacing your current lenses with your new prescription lenses and still using your existing frames.
So, instead of ordering a completely new pair of eyeglasses just because your prescription needs to be updated is no longer a necessity. Now, you can take your glasses to the lens maker and ask to have them reglaze prescription glasses. Just give them your eyeglasses and your new prescription.
Your new prescription will tell the lens maker what is needed. The first thing to note about your prescription is the Latin which denotes your left eye and your right eye. Oculus Sinister (OS) means left eye in Latin. Oculus dexter (OD) means right eye in Latin. The sphere (SPH) indicates the lens power with a (-) sign alerting the lens maker that you are nearsighted and a (+) sign telling them you are farsighted.
The next note on the prescription is for the astigmatism prescription. Nothing written in this column indicates you do not have a significant astigmatism, or you do not have an astigmatism. If you have an astigmatism there will be a (+) or (-) sign indicating farsighted or nearsighted correction is needed.
The next prescription note is for the Axis. The axis is the lens meridian that contains no cylinder power to correct an astigmatism. The number 90 is the vertical meridian of the eye, while the number 180 is the horizontal meridian of the eye.
If you wear bifocals, you are suffering from vision troubles aggravated by age. Most people naturally become farsighted with age. This condition is called, Presbyopia. If “Add” is on your prescription it indicates that lower portion of the lens. This will always be a plus power whether it has a (+) sign or not. This power will range from +.75 to +3.00 D.
An example of an reglaze prescription glasses will list these items in this order for both eyes, OD and OS:
SPH CYL Axis Add Prism
If you have an eye alignment issue, Prism will also have a number in its column. This only occurs in a few people, so it’s not that common. It is the prismatic power, measured in prism diopters or “p.d.” Prism direction is indicated by: BU = base up; BD = base down; BI = base in meaning toward the wearer’s nose; BO = base out meaning toward the wearer’s ear.
