If you play hoops and have a sizeable backyard, then you should definitely consider adding practice basketball goals to this space. Organized team sports may be hard to play right now but you can still train and polish your game on your own. With a ball, you can practice your dribbling and handling. With a basket, you can start to drill shot from different spots around an imagined court. Make sure that you pick a standard sized practice basketball goals for best results. Make the installation as sturdy as possible to prevent movement when the ball bounces. Refine the following shots as best as you can:
The Free Throw
The free throw may seem like the simplest shot there is yet in many ways it is also the hardest. You don’t have defenders to block the view of the basket and threaten to steal the ball but all eyes are on you when trying to make it. The long anticipation after a foul and the pressure to score in the dying minutes can be a lot to bear. Some people are able to drill three-pointers but they miss their free throws because of stress. Others just don’t have the range to make it reliably. Practice makes perfect so shoot as many free throws as you can until your body memorizes the entire movement and you get close to 100%.
The Lay Up
Lay-ups are high-percentage shots because you get close to the basket. However, you can still mess it up if you don’t have the right technique. Avoid mistakes when you get golden opportunities to do a lay-up such as fast breaks. Some players get hesitant in attacking the basket for a lay-up because of the defenders waiting to block. During practice, imagine the toughest opponents guarding the path and think of ways to evade them. You can even practice reverse lay-ups which are effective in preventing blocks.
The Jump Shot
Lastly, work on your jump shot from different angles and distances. If you have a favorite spot, then polish this even more. Just remember that opponents will pick up on this and try to prevent you from getting good positioning. That’s why you need to increase your range and vary your spots on the floor. Shoot from both the left and the right side. Go long and go short. Think about what you’ll do if a hand is on your face. Shake off the defender and jump.
