After all, when you are accountable to yourself for your performance, you are much more likely to work hard to reach your goals. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. You become aware that your performance affects the outcome of the work and begin to take responsibility for it.

The rewards can either be practical, such as extra ice cream or a vacation, or intangible rewards, such as having their names put on a wall or receiving a certificate. The students have control as to how much effort they put into their performance. It also allows them to compare their performance with others in their class and to strive even harder.
